Dr. Sumit Das, MD
Dr. Sumit Das received his Bachelor of Science from the University of Michigan in biomedical sciences and continued at Michigan for his degree in medicine. He received various awards at Michigan, including the prestigious Edgar A. Kahn Award in Neurosurgery. After completing his residency at Mount Sinai Medical Center under the direction of Dr. Kalmon D. Post, Dr. Das served as an integral part of practices in Washington and Rhode Island. After only a few years in Rhode Island, Dr. Das founded the Brain & Spine Neurosurgical Institute, which has become one of the few multidisciplinary practices in the area. In the field of neurosurgery, Dr. Das' interests include minimally invasive spine surgery with the utilization of sophisticated radiographic and microscopic techniques. He strives to keep up with the ever-emerging challenges in neurosurgery, including fusion techniques and artificial disc replacement procedures.
Dr. Das is also an active member of the neurosurgical community through his participation in the American Association of Neurosurgery. When Dr. Das is not in the office or the operating room, you can find him on the tennis court playing with or teaching tennis to his two children, Nikhil and Aunjoli.
Dr. Thomas Rocco, MD
Dr. Thomas Rocco has lived in Rhode Island since 1993 when he began his general surgery training at Brown University. Prior to moving, he grew up and went to high school in Long Island, NY. His undergraduate studies were at The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland where he received his degree in biology. He obtained his medical degree while attending University Health Sciences/Chicago Medical School.
Dr. Rocco has completed a board certification in general surgery. He has additional training in a Surgical Critical Care fellowship and is Wound Care Certified. Dr. Rocco has trained in spinal injections and is an active member of the North American Spine Society. Dr. Rocco is heavily involved in youth sports in his local town. He is active as a coach/volunteer for several team sports and is on the Board of Directors for Portsmouth Youth Football. He has recently traveled abroad to Kenya as the medical liaison to the Africa Teacher Foundation, which is locally supported by the University of Rhode Island.
Dr. Gus G. Stratton, MD
Dr. Gus G. Stratton is bilingual, speaking Spanish in addition to his native English, and graduated from the Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara in 1981. He completed Internship in Internal Medicine at Long Island College Hospital in Brooklyn, New York, and completed Neurology Residency at New York University-Bellevue Hospital Center in New York, New York. He had been in private practice for 28 years in General Neurology and Neurophysiology with a special interest in Multiple Sclerosis before joining Brain & Spine Neurosurgical Institute. In addition to Consultative Neurology, he provides additional services that include Electroencephalography (EEG), Electromyography and Nerve Conduction Studies (EMG/NCS), Botox for Migraine, and a number of minimally invasive procedures for pain management including Lumbar Epidural Steroid Injections, Facet Injections, Sacroiliac Joint Injections, and Trigger Point Injections.
When not in the office, Dr. Stratton enjoys sailing, playing the piano, gardening, cooking, and beekeeping with his wife Beverly.
Mohini Yalanis, RNP
Mohini Yalanis, RNP has been with BSNI since July 2010. Originally from Connecticut, she received her Bachelor's of Science in Nursing from the University of Connecticut in 1994. A registered nurse for 15 years, her experience was primarily in critical care. In 2009, she completed her Master’s in Nursing at the University of Rhode Island and is now a certified Nurse Practitioner.
Mohini’s extensive background in nursing has taught her the importance of providing care that takes the unique needs of her patients into consideration. She performs pre- and post-operative patient evaluations, interprets diagnostic imaging, and works hard to educate her patients about surgery. Mohini assists Dr. Das during surgery and is involved in all steps of her patient’s treatment process.
In her personal life, Mohini enjoys spending time with her family. She has three children, ages 16, 14, and 11 and loves driving them around to their many activities. When she is not busy being a mom or a nurse practitioner, you can find her jogging all over Aquidneck Island.
Brittany Bertone, PA-C
Brittany Bertone, PA-C has been with BSNI since May 2016. Originally from New Jersey, she received her Bachelor of Science from Salve Regina University. She completed her Master's in Physician Assistant Studies at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in Boston, Massachusetts.
Brittany interprets imaging reviews, performs post operative care patient evaluations, and assists Dr. Das in surgery. She is actively involved in all her patient's care.
In her personal life, Brittany enjoys playing tennis and walking her dog.
