What is Spinal Stenosis?

Spinal stenosis is a gradual narrowing of the spaces within your spine, which can put pressure on the nerves that travel through it. Think of it like a water pipe developing rust on the inside; over time, the opening gets smaller, restricting flow.

This narrowing is usually caused by age-related changes, such as thickened ligaments or bone spurs (osteoarthritis). When these structures crowd the spinal canal, they pinch the sensitive nerves inside, leading to a heavy, cramping sensation in the legs or pain when standing upright for too long.

Do You Recognize These Symptoms?

Spinal stenosis symptoms often develop slowly over time. If you notice these specific patterns in your daily movement, a consultation is recommended.

Pain While Walking

Pain or cramping in the legs that gets worse the longer you walk, often forcing you to stop and rest.

"Grocery Cart" Relief

You find relief when leaning forward—like pushing a shopping cart—or when sitting down, which opens the spinal canal.

Heavy Feeling in Legs

A sensation that your legs are heavy, weak, or "made of cement" after standing upright for a period of time.

Numbness & Tingling

Pins and needles sensations in the buttocks or legs that may come and go with activity.

Difficulty Standing Straight

Discomfort in the lower back that increases when arching your back or standing perfectly straight.

Balance Issues

In more advanced cases, you may feel clumsy or unsteady on your feet due to nerve compression.

Request a consultation if you are experiencing any of these symptoms.

Dr. Sumit Das’s Evaluation & Treatment

With over 25 years of neurosurgical experience, Dr. Das accurately diagnoses the severity of your stenosis to build a plan that restores your mobility.

Physical Examination

Our evaluation includes assessing your gait (how you walk) and posture. We test how your symptoms change when bending forward versus standing straight to confirm stenosis.

Detailed Imaging

We utilize MRI or CT imaging to visualize the spinal canal, identifying exactly where bone spurs or thickened ligaments are narrowing the space and compressing nerves.

Our Conservative-First Philosophy

Spinal stenosis is a chronic condition, but it doesn't always require surgery. Dr. Das prioritizes non-invasive methods to manage pain and improve your walking distance before considering surgical decompression.

Physical Therapy

We focus on flexion-based exercises that naturally open the spinal canal, along with core strengthening to support the spine and reduce pressure on the lower back.

Targeted Injections

Epidural steroid injections can reduce swelling around the compressed nerves, providing significant relief from leg pain and improving your ability to walk.

Medication Management

We may prescribe specific medications that target nerve pain (like Gabapentin) or anti-inflammatories to help manage daily discomfort.

Minimally Invasive Surgery

If conservative care fails, a procedure like a Laminectomy can be performed to remove the bone spurs and create space, permanently relieving pressure on the nerves.

Successful Treatment of Spinal Stenosis

Walk Without Limits: Regain the ability to walk through the grocery store or take a stroll without needing to stop and rest.

Stand Tall: Ability to stand upright for conversations or tasks without feeling heaviness or pain in the legs.

Active Lifestyle: Return to the hobbies you love without the fear of your legs "giving out" or tiring prematurely.
