What is Sciatica?

Sciatica is not a condition in itself, but a symptom of an underlying problem involving the sciatic nerve—the longest and thickest nerve in the body. It typically occurs when a herniated disc, bone spur, or spinal stenosis compresses part of the nerve.

This compression causes inflammation, pain, and numbness that radiates from your lower back, through your hips and buttocks, and down the affected leg. While the pain can be severe, most cases resolve with non-operative treatments like spinal decompression within a few weeks.

Do You Recognize These Symptoms?

Sciatica symptoms can range from a mild ache to a sharp, burning sensation or excruciating pain. If you are experiencing these signs, a consultation is recommended.

Radiating Leg Pain

Pain that originates in the lower spine and radiates through the buttock and down the back of the leg.

One-Sided Pain

Sciatica typically affects only one side of the lower body at a time, extending from the hip to the foot.

Burning Sensation

Discomfort often described as burning, searing, or like an "electric shock" rather than a dull ache.

Numbness & Weakness

Numbness, tingling, or muscle weakness in the affected leg or foot, making it hard to move.

Pain While Sitting

Symptoms that worsen after prolonged sitting, or when you cough, sneeze, or strain.

Hip Discomfort

Constant pain in only one side of the buttock or hip that does not subside with rest.

Request a consultation if you are experiencing any of these symptoms.

Dr. Sumit Das’s Evaluation & Treatment

Dr. Sumit Das brings over 25 years of neurosurgical expertise to identify the root cause of your sciatica and provide lasting relief.

Physical Examination

Our evaluation includes checking your muscle strength and reflexes, along with specific movements like raising your leg to see if it triggers sciatic pain.

Diagnostic Imaging

We utilize MRI or CT scans to visualize the bone spurs or herniated discs that are pressing on your sciatic nerve, allowing for a precise treatment plan.

Our Conservative-First Philosophy

Sciatica often resolves with non-invasive care. Dr. Das prioritizes spinal decompression and inflammation management to relieve pressure without surgery whenever possible.

Physical Therapy

Exercises to correct posture, strengthen the muscles supporting your back, and improve flexibility to prevent future nerve compression.

Epidural Injections

Corticosteroid medication is injected into the area around the spinal nerve to reduce inflammation and acute pain.

Spinal Decompression

Non-surgical techniques to gently stretch the spine, taking pressure off the discs and allowing the sciatic nerve to heal.

Microdiscectomy

If conservative care fails, this minimally invasive surgery removes the fragment of disc or bone compressing the nerve.

Successful Treatment of Sciatica

Restored Mobility: Return to walking, running, and daily activities without the fear of sudden shooting pain.

Pain-Free Sitting: Enjoy driving or working at a desk without the constant need to shift positions to avoid discomfort.

Eliminated Numbness: Regain full sensation and strength in your legs and feet, preventing weakness or tripping.
