Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery: Faster Recovery, Less Pain

At the Brain & Spine Neurosurgical Institute, Dr. Sumit Das specializes in Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (MISS)—a revolutionary approach that targets the source of your pain with pinpoint precision. By using advanced microscopic techniques we can relieve pressure on your nerves while preserving the surrounding muscle and tissue. The result? You get back to your life faster, with less pain and a smaller scar. Same day appointments avalaible at 5 Rhode Island Locations.

What is Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery?

Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (MISS) is not a single procedure, but a philosophy of care that prioritizes your body’s natural anatomy. Unlike traditional "open" surgery, which requires stripping muscles away from the spine to access the problem area, MISS uses specialized instruments and high-powered microscopes to work through small incisions—often less than an inch long.

Dr. Das utilizes sophisticated radiographic guidance to insert a small tube (dilator) between the muscle fibers, gently spreading them apart rather than cutting them. Through this narrow channel, we can remove herniated discs, clear bone spurs, or stabilize the spine. Because the muscle is preserved, post-operative pain is significantly reduced, blood loss is minimized, and the structural integrity of your spine remains intact.

Do You Recognize These Symptoms?

Minimally invasive techniques can resolve a wide range of spinal conditions. If you are suffering from any of the following, you may be a candidate for MISS.

Shooting Pain in Limbs

Sharp pain that travels from the spine down into the arms or legs (often called radiculopathy), usually caused by a pinched nerve.

Leg Cramping When Walking

A feeling of heaviness or cramping in the legs when walking or standing for long periods, which is a classic sign of spinal stenosis.

Sharp Pain Down the Leg

Intense pain radiating through the buttock and down the back of the leg (sciatica), typically resulting from a herniated lumbar disc.

Muscle Weakness

Noticeable loss of strength in your arms or legs, such as "foot drop" (tripping often) or difficulty gripping objects.

Numbness or Tingling

A "pins and needles" sensation in your hands or feet that does not go away with rest or basic medication.

Stiff or Locked Back

Severe stiffness that makes it hard to move or twist, often accompanied by localized pain in the neck or lower back.

Dr. Sumit Das’s Evaluation & Treatment

With over 25 years of neurosurgical expertise, Dr. Das determines the most effective, least invasive path to restoring your quality of life.

Comprehensive Diagnosis

Dr. Das performs a thorough physical assessment to correlate your symptoms with your anatomy, ensuring we treat the patient, not just the MRI scan.

Precise Imaging

We utilize advanced imaging techniques to map the surgical site, allowing Dr. Das to plan the most minimally invasive trajectory possible.

A Conservative-First Approach

Surgery is rarely the first step. Dr. Das believes in a multidisciplinary approach, exhausting all non-surgical options like therapy and injections before recommending Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (MISS).

Active Rehabilitation

Pre-surgical and post-surgical physical therapy is crucial to strengthen the core muscles that support the spine and prevent future injury.

Diagnostic Injections

Targeted steroid injections can help confirm the exact source of pain while providing temporary relief to facilitate physical therapy.

Symptom Management

Using anti-inflammatories and non-narcotic pain management strategies to control acute flare-ups during the healing process.

Minimally Invasive Surgery

If conservative care fails, Dr. Das performs MISS to remove the compression through a tiny incision, allowing you to walk out the same day.

Successful Treatment

Faster Recovery, Better Outcomes. The primary goal of Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery is to achieve the same effective decompression or stabilization as open surgery but with significantly less collateral damage. Because the muscles are spared, patients typically experience less post-operative pain and require less reliance on pain medication.

Most of our MISS patients are able to walk within hours of the procedure and return home the same day. Recovery times vary by condition, but many individuals return to light daily activities within a few weeks—far sooner than the months of recovery often associated with traditional open spine surgery. At BSNI, our team supports you every step of the way, from your initial consultation through your return to an active, pain-free life.
