What is a Herniated Disc?

MRI showing disc herniation

A herniated disc is a physiological disruption of your spine’s shock absorbers. Your spine is composed of vertebrae separated by discs that allow for flexibility and cushioning. When the tough outer layer (annulus) tears due to age, injury, or repetitive stress, the soft inner gel (nucleus) can leak out.

This extruded material presses against sensitive spinal nerves, causing inflammation and pain that travels far beyond the spine itself.

Do You Recognize These Symptoms?

Herniated disc symptoms vary depending on the location and severity of the injury. If you are experiencing these, a consultation is recommended.

Lower Back Pain

Persistent pain in the lower back is a hallmark of lumbar disc herniation. Often radiates to buttocks/legs.

Neck Pain

Persistent pain in the neck that may radiate to the shoulders, arms, and even hands.

Sciatica

Sharp pain radiating from the lower back down one leg due to sciatic nerve compression.

Numbness & Tingling

Pins and needles sensation in the arms, hands, fingers (cervical) or legs and feet (lumbar).

Muscle Weakness

Weakness impacting activities such as walking, gripping objects, or standing on tiptoes.

Reflex Changes

Diminished or exaggerated reflexes in the extremities indicating nerve compression.

Request a consultation if you are experiencing any of these symptoms.

Dr. Sumit Das’s Evaluation & Treatment

Dr. Sumit Das brings over 25 years of neurosurgical expertise to your diagnosis, ensuring a path to recovery built on precision and care.

Physical Examination

Our evaluation begins with a comprehensive physical exam to test your reflexes, muscle strength, and sensation to understand the functional impact of your symptoms.

Advanced MRI Imaging

We utilize high-resolution MRI imaging to pinpoint the exact level of herniation and the degree of nerve compression, allowing for an accurate clinical roadmap.

Our Conservative-First Philosophy

Contrary to common fears, the vast majority of herniated discs heal without surgery. Dr. Das prioritizes a multidisciplinary treatment plan designed to reduce inflammation and support your body’s natural healing process.

Physical Therapy

Targeted exercises and stretches designed to improve spine flexibility, core strength, and overall mobility.

On-Site Injections

Epidural steroid injections delivered right in our office provide powerful anti-inflammatory relief directly to the irritated nerve root.

Medication Management

Strategic use of over-the-counter or prescription medications to help manage acute pain and systemic inflammation.

Surgical Intervention

Procedures like a discectomy are considered only if conservative methods fail, removing the herniated portion to alleviate compression.

Successful Treatment of a Herniated Disc

Sleeping Soundly: No more waking up in the middle of the night from sharp leg pain.

Pain-Free Sitting: Ability to drive or sit at work without discomfort.

Instant Relief: Many patients feel the "electric shock" sensation vanish immediately after treatment.
